Train Like an Astronaut: Summer 2026 at the World of Technology Ostrava

During July and August 2026, the World of Technology Ostrava will host the Train Like an Astronaut programme. This event is part of a nationwide activity in Czech science centres and offers visitors the chance to try out preparation for a space mission.

The nationwide programme has been prepared by the Czech Association of Science Centres in collaboration with ESERO Czech Republic, the educational office of the European Space Agency for the Czech Republic. It is based on the Europe-wide educational activity ESA Mission X and follows the initiative Czech Path to Space, which aims to promote interest among children and young people in science, technology, and space technologies.

What the programme offers:

  • Physical and technical skills: Practical tests focused on coordination and solving tasks related to operating a spacecraft.
  • Mission simulation: Activities that illustrate the demands on the crew in the challenging conditions of outer space.
  • Educational content: Information about astronaut physiology and the functioning of survival systems in space.

The programme is accessible to the general public as part of the regular operation of the centre.

The tasks are inspired by real astronaut training. Participants will practice strength, endurance, balance, coordination, and teamwork, and learn how gravity affects the human body and why proper nutrition is important for astronauts.

The World of Technology in Dolní Vítkovice

The Great World of Technology was opened in 2014 and offers four permanent exhibitions over an area of 14,000 m²: The World of Science and Discoveries, The World of Civilization, The World of Nature with an outdoor geological-botanical garden, and The Children's World for children aged 2 to 6 years. It is located in the Dolní Vítkovice area, a former ironworks where iron was produced until 1998 and which is now a national cultural monument.
