Bolt Tower and Bolt Café
Bolt Tower is an extension at the top of Blast Furnace No. 1 in Dolní Vítkovice, designed by architect Josef Pleskot and completed in 2015. The furnace, along with the extension, measures 77.7 meters. Inside the glass cylinder is the Bolt Café, with an outdoor walkway winding around it, and at the top, there is a terrace with telescopes and views of Vítkovice, Ostrava, and, on clear days, the Beskydy mountains. An elevator and a spiral staircase in the steel core of the tower lead to the top.
The name of the tower came from a public competition. It refers to the spiral shape of the glass structure and to Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt, a regular participant in the Ostrava athletics meeting Zlatá tretra, who himself inaugurated the tower shortly after its opening.
Blast Furnace No. 1 is one of the landmarks of Dolní Vítkovice, a former industrial site where iron production ceased in 1998 and which is now a national cultural monument. You could thus combine your Valentine's visit to the café with a walk around the area.
