The exhibition PRIVATE EDENS – Allotment Gardeners as a Phenomenon presents a long-term photographic project by David Macháč, who has been documenting allotment colonies in the Czech Republic and abroad since 2006.
The theme is not only the appearance of the gardens themselves but primarily the relationship of the individual to the place they create as their personal world. Macháč is interested in how the personality of the allotment gardener is reflected in the appearance of the garden and the cottage – that is, in a kind of "small architecture" of everyday life. The photographs capture the direct connection between the portrayed individuals and their own creation, showing allotment colonies as a specific urban phenomenon where privacy, aesthetics, creativity, and social trends intertwine.
The exhibition thus offers a view of allotment gardening not just as a hobby but as a distinct cultural and social phenomenon.
