Traditional New Year's Ascent to Landek! Landek is a significant national natural monument located in the district of Ostrava-Petřkovice. This area is one of the most valuable natural and historical regions of Ostrava and is exceptional for its geological, natural science, and cultural-historical value. The dominant feature of the area is the Landek hill, which rises above the confluence of the Odra and Ostravice rivers and provides a natural viewpoint of the surrounding landscape. From a geological perspective, Landek is extraordinarily significant as coal seams come to the surface here, which is a relatively rare phenomenon in Europe. This fact led to the very early use of coal by humans – Landek is considered the oldest documented site of coal mining and usage in Central Europe. The area also has great archaeological significance, as evidence of settlement has been found here dating back to the Paleolithic period, including the famous Petřkovice Venus. More information HERE.
