In 2024, a unique exhibit called Heart in Action was created in the World of Technology, aimed not only at visualizing heart activity but also at bringing closer to visitors the often-overlooked topic of heart disorders and pathologies. Visitors can measure their heart rate, observe the mechanical activity of the heart, the propagation of action potentials, and a simulated ECG signal. Through an interactive quiz, they can then attempt to identify one of the 13 most common heart disorders. The model is the result of several months of development and is based on the original laboratory solution of the research team from VŠB-TUO. It has been tailored to meet the needs of exhibition operations – that is, for intensive daily use by hundreds of visitors. The modifications concerned both the construction and the software. The technical team of the World of Technology worked on the modifications of the model into the form of the current exhibit in collaboration with the Biomedical Engineering Laboratories of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at VŠB-TUO. "The model certainly has potential as an educational tool for medical faculties, but also for educating patients," adds the team of authors. Currently, the model is protected as a functional sample and registered software. Its quality is evidenced by the interest of both professional and lay audiences, which has been reflected in a number of articles published this year in the Moravskoslezský Deník, the online portal of Metro newspaper, in the Alumni magazine of VŠB-TUO, and on the pages of the University of Ostrava. Visitors will find the exhibit in the exhibition section World of Science and Discoveries. The realization of the exhibit was financed from the budget of the Statutory City of Ostrava as part of Futurova 2024 (reg. no. 0900/2024/KaŠ).
