The beloved and rare red squirrels from the Ostrava Landek Park are thriving in their new and larger home. This February, an unknown vandal damaged the aviary located next to the Refreshment at Ledňáček, causing the squirrels to scatter into the forest. The chances of their rescue were slim. However, thanks to the contributions of numerous volunteers and the company Heimstaden, which provided building materials, the original aviary was repaired and an additional one was built. Currently, a total of eight of these adorable rodents, including young ones, inhabit it; recently, one white-colored squirrel joined the previously red ones. The population of common red squirrels, once very common in the Czech Republic, is declining. Black and brown shades now prevail. The aim of the project focused on breeding the less common red squirrels at Landek, spearheaded by animal breeder Jiří Rachfalík, is to eventually return these colored animals back to the wild. Come and see the squirrels; a trip to Landek can be a great holiday tip. You can also combine it with a visit to the Mining Museum.
