Description – Milan Dobeš Museum

Dear visitors,

we are currently preparing a new exhibition and expanding the artistic scope of the space. On Tuesday, 8 March 2022 at 17:00, we look forward to seeing you at the newly established Gallery Gong.

Selected works by Milan Dobeš and op-art will be part of the gallery. Thank you for your understanding.

The Milan Dobeš Museum, located on the ground floor of the multifunctional hall Gong, is architecturally designed into seven parts and is a testament to the excellent work of internationally renowned architect Josef Pleskot.

The mission of the Milan Dobeš Museum is to care for the collection of artworks by the European representative of op-art, pioneer of dynamic constructivism Milan Dobeš. In addition to the works of this unique artist, it also showcases leading global stars of geometric abstraction. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions presenting modern artists to the public – Krištof Kintera, Andrzej Nowacki, Anna Ossiecka and others. The Milan Dobeš Museum strives to support the relationship of both domestic and foreign visitors to visual art.

The operation of the museum is supported by the Milan Dobeš Museum Foundation, established in September 2017 by Jan Světlík and Milan Dobeš and the Svetlik art foundation.

Milan Dobeš and Gallery Gong

Milan Dobeš was born on 29 July 1929 in Přerov and lived and worked in Bratislava from 1951. He is one of the pioneers of kinetic art and contributed to the development of op-art. The museum bearing his name was opened in Bratislava in 2001 and was moved to Ostrava in 2017. He passed away on 17 October 2025 in Bratislava at the age of 96.

Gallery Gong, which followed the museum, is located in the entrance hall of Gong and primarily presents visual art in an interactive form in the spirit of the Education Art approach. From 9 October to 6 December 2026, it hosts the exhibition Light – a tribute to Milan Dobeš, which connects his work focused on optics, movement, and light with pieces by contemporary artists.
