Among the main activities of the Dolní oblast VÍTKOVICE association is informal education. Educational programs primarily take place in classrooms, laboratories, and exhibitions of the World of Technology, but there is also activity in the Gong Gallery or the travelling Little Craftsman, conducted directly in kindergartens.
Throughout the 2023/2024 school year, 21,600 students participated in classes under the auspices of Dolní Vítkovice. The children were regularly attended to by 20 highly educated lecturers – both internal and external. With enthusiasm, they prepared various educational blocks for "their" students to ensure that the material was primarily enjoyable. Among the popular programs were "Robot Ozobot" and "Blue-bot" focusing on IT/robotics. While controlling the Blue-bot, students gained insights into what algorithms are and how they are implemented as programs in digital devices. The children learned to create and debug simple programs, practicing logical thinking.
In the block "3-2-1- start!", students first watched an animated film, then together tried to assemble a rocket and ventured into the space exhibition, where they closely examined the planets Earth and Moon. In the context of biology, educators could choose, for example, the program "Living Here with Us". The children entered the fascinating world of microorganisms, where they learned basic laboratory techniques and microscope observation, seeing single-celled organisms and their manifestations. The entire activity took place in a modernly equipped natural science laboratory. Additionally, there were and will continue to be blocks supporting the teaching of physics, chemistry, art education, or practical activities.
"Teachers appreciate the individual approach to children. The topic is conducted in a creative and fun way, developing critical thinking and prompts for discussion. We have both a chemistry and a biology laboratory, workshops for manual activities where children work with various materials including wood. They can also view demonstrations in the exhibitions of the World of Technology. They enjoy the 3D cinema and our science show. We regularly organize themed days, workshops, and lectures focusing on various areas, especially science and technology," specifies the director of the education and exhibitions section, Dr. Eliška Kulová. "Moreover, during the holidays, a deeper review of educational programs will take place; we already know that we want to expand the offer of educational programs to include the U6 space," added Kulová.
Children's education in Dolní Vítkovice could not be realized without financial support. The cities of Ostrava, Havířov, Frýdek – Místek, Bohumín, and Opava financially contribute to the education of their small and larger residents. "I greatly appreciate such enlightened approaches from city representatives. We also have strong support overall from the Moravian-Silesian Region. I teach part-time at a gymnasium myself. For students, I am a person from practice. Students welcome any additional form of explanation, revitalization of the material, and occasional change of environment. It helps the classroom climate. I therefore strongly support such an approach," adds the director of Dolní Vítkovice, Renata Červená.
Regular educational activities began in Dolní Vítkovice back in 2013. To date, 13,684 educational programs have been implemented, and hundreds of project days and excursions have taken place. So far, an impressive 421,956 children from kindergartens, primary, and secondary schools have participated in informal education programs in Dolní Vítkovice.
