The Landek Park Mining Museum offers three special experiential programs in the summer. Last year, the main season kicked off with Miner on Shift, and this year it is joined by the special programs Rescue Hero and Done in 90 Minutes.
Green Landek and black mining, rich greenery above, coal below. Green and black – the mining colours, with an iron and hammer in the emblem. And the unmistakable Zdař Bůh! This is how you can imagine one of the greenest places just a stone's throw from the city centre, where the museum pays tribute to the hard work and legacy of previous generations that built the Ostrava region.
“Sometimes it happens that one wants to forget what was, because it is no longer modern and trendy. This does not apply here. We strive to bring mining closer through new experiential programs, including authentic speech. The miner was inspired by an afternoon shift at the mine, completing tasks that precede the actual descent into the mine. Even that soup before the shift must be drunk, just like in the past, we do not serve spoons,” explains the Miner on Shift program Renata Červená, director of Dolní Vítkovice, under which the museum at Landek falls.
“The rescue hero is a kind of training for the role of a mining rescuer,” adds Ján Hlobil from the Mining Museum. “The visitor gets the opportunity to immerse themselves in the work of a rescuer by completing work tasks, where they are introduced to the basics of the activities of mining rescuers in an interactive way. Participants in the program are also familiarised with the special techniques needed for rescue work. One does not just become a mining rescuer; they had to be a real hero,” clarifies Hlobil.
The aim of the last experiential tour Done in 90 Minutes! is to provide visitors with an understanding of the development of Ostrava-Karviná mining from its beginnings to the present day and further until the cessation of operations in the district. The program consists of the existing tour route supplemented with elements involving the process of building mining works and the actual extraction. The work of miners is presented not only from the perspective of the development of the environment and conditions of mining in OKR but primarily focusing on the reasons for choosing a physically and mentally demanding and often life-threatening profession, such as mining.
“We have great guides, guys who have worked underground or as mining rescuers. They know what they are talking about. Yes, they are a bit rough, but at least they do not pretend, which is rare these days. Here you get it all, including a coarser vocabulary,” adds Renata Červená.
Landek Park is a great place for relaxation in the summer. It offers not only plenty of refreshments but also activities for the whole family. In addition to the new offerings at the Mining Museum, this year there is also a unique rope centre with an unconventional arrangement of rope obstacles spread across several routes.
The Mining Museum in Ostrava-Petřkovice is operated by the registered association Dolní oblast VÍTKOVICE, and all information and tours are updated on the website www.dolnivitkovice.cz.
