The science centre in Dolní Vítkovice, which includes the Great World of Technology and the Small World of Technology U6, will now be led by Kateřina Bonito. In her role as head of the well-known centre for interactive education for children, popularisation of science and technology, and informal education, she will succeed Jakub Švrček after ten years. Both will continue to collaborate, and as they both say, overcome the challenges of uncertain times, for which education and science may be the solution. Kateřina Bonito has worked for the statutory city of Ostrava for the last 10 years, in roles as a strategic planning specialist and an external funding specialist. Additionally, she has also worked abroad for companies such as Pricewaterhouse Coopers and Lufthansa GTS Group Dublin. Thanks to this, she has excellent language skills. She is fluent in English at a fully professional level and can also communicate in Portuguese and French. However, the new head of the World of Technology has her roots in Ostrava, where she also studied at the University of Ostrava.
"Until now, I have been focused on the development of the city. I have tried to understand its needs and, together with my colleagues, find ways to advance the city, primarily through the implementation of good practices from other Czech and European cities. I would like to use this valuable experience in my new role and continue to develop, this time not the city as a whole, but one of its most significant areas of social life. Although the current times create certain obstacles in this regard, on the other hand, they give us time and opportunity to carefully consider the future of our educational attractions," says K. Bonito.
Jakub Švrček, who stood at the figurative starting line of one of the first pioneering science centres in the Czech Republic, will now focus on selected projects in Dolní Vítkovice in the role of project manager. "From the beginning, I have tried to dedicate maximum energy to our centre and the popularisation of science and technology because I felt that this was absolutely essential. After more than ten years, I have now come to the conclusion that I have done everything I could and wanted, and therefore I want to dedicate myself to other activities," stated J. Švrček.
The Ostrava World of Technology includes two completely different buildings. The historic former energy centre U6 and a new building designed by the world-renowned architect Josef Pleskot. The new building, thanks to its mirrored façade, boasts a unique and constantly changing reflection of the old blast furnaces in Dolní Vítkovice. These are a national cultural monument, which, along with the entire Dolní Vítkovice complex, regularly ranks among the most visited tourist sites in the Czech Republic.
