The Great World of Technology in Dolní Vítkovice (DOV) has a new "exhibit". It is the Toyota Mirai, the very first hydrogen vehicle that is sold as a regular production car in the Czech Republic. The hydrogen car number 1 will be part of the exhibition showcasing the world of nature until August 25, 2021. "A car whose only emission into the environment is pure water cannot be missing from our science centre. We want to show the public that hydrogen is a common part of life and can help heal our planet," said the director of Dolní Vítkovice, Tomáš Šiřina.
The intention to present the vehicle, according to him, follows the ambitions of Vítkovice and Cylinders Holding, companies that want to eventually build a hydrogen part of the city, Hydrogen District, in Ostrava. This would border Dolní Vítkovice against the flow of the Ostravice River. Vítkovice will provide land, while Cylinders Holding and other companies will provide hydrogen and circular technologies. Dolní Vítkovice will take on the role of education and popularisation. "Giving people the opportunity to gain personal experience with hydrogen technology will be the most important thing we need to accomplish," explained the CEO of Cylinders Holding, Jan Světlík, why companies are also involved in the exhibition at DOV. From autumn, as he added, educational cycles about hydrogen will also take place in Dolní Vítkovice. They should be aimed at both professional and lay public, companies and institutions that will increasingly encounter hydrogen technologies, as well as high school students.
In the Czech Republic, the sale of the first hydrogen fuel cell passenger car started this April. The current model is the second generation of hydrogen electric vehicles. It has a range of 650 kilometres and refuelling takes no more than five minutes. Refuelling gaseous hydrogen works through a filling valve under a pressure of 700 bars. Pure hydrogen from the tanks combines with oxygen drawn in by compressors at the front of the vehicle during operation, and the final reaction occurs in the fuel cell under the hood of the car. The resulting electrical energy powers the electric motor, and the only waste from this reaction is pure water.
"The second generation Toyota Mirai is ahead of its time in many ways and brings unique technologies. We are excited to be at the beginning of the hydrogen era in the Czech Republic," commented the CEO of Toyota and Lexus Czech Republic, Martin Peleška. Although the hydrogen car has appeared in Moravia, and thus in Ostrava for the first time, it will eventually be complemented by hybrid cars that the project supporter Za čistou Ostravu, the company Autobond Group, should increasingly offer. The Toyota Mirai is a standard car, so it will leave the exhibition at the Great World of Technology and will return to it as needed. The nearest return date is from August 30 to September 2, 2021.
