We have good news! The rare red squirrels, whose aviary was broken by someone in Landek Park, and who then escaped (or were taken away), have returned home! 6th February 2022 Welcome back, Božka! The squirrels are back Pregnant red squirrel Božka, the jewel of the aviary in Ostrava's Landek Park, is back home. She was hungry but in good spirits. She spent Sunday afternoon where she will give birth to less common young red squirrels in the coming weeks. She went missing from the aviary on Saturday night after an unknown vandal damaged the enclosure. The male Hefron is back too. Only the other male Honzík is still missing. "The most important thing is that Božka is back. She was raised on a bottle, she was not at all accustomed to or prepared for life in the wild, she wouldn't have survived long. Moreover, she is pregnant and it is important for us that the red squirrels breed," thanked the keeper Jiří Rachfalík to everyone who tried to find Božka after it spread that she had gone missing with the other squirrels. There are several possibilities for what the squirrels did since Saturday. They may have just run away, lured by hunger, or the thief's conscience moved him and he released the animals somewhere around Landek. They then managed to get back into the aviary. The keepers believe that Honzík will return too. "I hope nothing has happened to him. Our squirrels live in the aviary and cannot cope with natural enemies in the wild. I hope he comes back," said Rachfalík. Thank you to all Božka's fans, lovers of all squirrels, and friends of Landek. The aim of breeding less common red squirrels is to eventually return such coloured animals to the wild. Original report from Saturday 5th February 2022: Rare red squirrels have disappeared from the broken aviary in Ostrava's Landek Park! The squirrels, which differ in colour from the vast majority, are in danger because they are not accustomed to life in the wild. They were acquired from a zoo. They lived in an aviary that was damaged by someone on Saturday night. The female BOŽKA was also pregnant. "It's a matter of hours; they won't survive in the wild. If someone released them into the wild, they won't last long, as they are defenseless and will be easy prey for predators, and they also cannot fend for themselves in the wild. By releasing them, someone has condemned them to a rather unpleasant death," believes Jiří Rachfalík, the animal keeper. Rachfalík believes that if someone released them into the wild right by Landek, they will find their way back. "But if they were released further away, they will survive at most a few days. It's sad," says Rachfalík. The red squirrel female Božka was also raised on a bottle, having been fed by keepers since she was a baby, so she is not at all accustomed to life in the wild. Red squirrels are rare here; black and brown shades of the common squirrel are much more common. Help find Božka and her squirrel friends. Call or write to 777 108 285. THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!
